The name Zacatán has a number
of meanings:
- Nahuatl: "the place of grass."
Since the reserve was largely deforested and grazed when we began
to manage it in 2000, this name is a reminder of reserve's
former ecological condition - and it enhances one's
appreciation for the ongoing afforestation and faunal
repopulation.
- Our
personal meaning: A blending of the Spanish names,
"Zacarias" and "Tristan" - in honor of our two sons. We can
only imagine how beautiful the reserve will be when these
guys grow up.
- Other random definitions: A Mayan percussion instrument
made from a tree trunk; a
Mayan
community in Belize.
